Vol. 429 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Cork Garda Stations.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

91 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the Garda station at Ballyfeard, County Cork has no sanitary or water facilities; and if she will have arrangements made to ensure that these facilities are provided.

The Garda station at Ballyfeard is open on a part-time basis only, usually for one hour a day, approximately five days a week. There is one member of the Garda Síochána attached to it.

It is proposed to build a new Garda station at this centre. The Office of Public Works are actively pursuing the purchase of a site for this purpose. There will be no avoidable delay in commencing work on this project once the site issue is resolved.

The Garda authorities have advised me that the improvement of the existing facilities at Ballyfeard would involve extensive construction work. It is not usual practice to incur substantial expenditure on a station which is only open part-time and which is due to be vacated within a year or so.

Question:

92 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the fact that there is a major problem in Kinsale arising from the small size of the Garda station; if her attention has further been drawn to the plans to extend the station to include an adjoining Garda residence; and if she will ensure that the work is put in hand immediately because of the importance of Kinsale as a tourist centre and the need for full facilities to be available for the members and the general public for the tourist season.

It is proposed to extend and upgrade the existing Garda station at Kinsale. This will involve converting the adjacent married quarters and carrying out alterations to the main station building. Plans are being finalised for this project with a view to inviting tenders this summer and placing a contract before the end of the year.
