Question:

124 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment whether he has received an application from Dublin Corporation for funds under the remedial works scheme in respect of window replacements and other improvements at Mary Aikenhead House, James's Street, Dublin 8; if his attention has been drawn to the chronic and dangerous state of many of the windows in this flat complex and to the urgent need for replacement; if, in these circumstances he is in a position to provide the funds in 1993 to permit the work to be commenced and completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 119, 123 and 124 together.

The extra £1 million provided in this year's budget for the renovation of inner city flats forms part of the allocation of £7.5 million which has been made to Dublin Corporation for their 1993 programme of remedial works, including inner city flats at Oliver Bond House, St. Mary's and St. Joseph's Mansions, and Blessington Street. The increased allocation will enable the designation for funding under the remedial works scheme of further flat complexes to which the corporation has accorded highest priority. Decisions on the schemes being newly designated will be conveyed to the corporation shortly.

An application has been received from the corporation for assistance for planned maintenance works, mainly window replacement, in 39 of their flat complexes throughout the city including Mary Aikenhead House and St. Michan's House. As the corporation has already been informed, these works are not eligible for funding under the remedial works scheme as the maintenance of their dwellings, including the replacement of windows, is the responsibility of the local authority to be funded from their own resources.
