Vol. 429 No. 7

Written Answers. - Irish Casino.

John Bruton

Question:

71 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice the reason the Garda Síochána authorities opposed the introduction of a casino in Ireland when asked about the matter in 1987.

The Garda authorities were concerned that the introduction of casino gambling could be accompanied by certain forms of criminality and public order problems and I share their concern in this regard.

My primary concern, however, would be that the negative social consequences of the introduction of this new dimension in gambling in Ireland would far outweigh any economic benefits which might arise.
