Vol. 429 No. 8

Written Answers. - Shortwave Broadcasting Service.

Robert Molloy

Question:

13 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he will establish an Irish international shortwave broadcasting service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I refer the Deputy to the answer to Question No. 18 on 29 October 1992, columns 1441 and 1442, volume 424, number 6 of the Official Report for that day.

I understand that the question of Ireland establishing a shortwave service has been examined from time to time and was the subject of special consideration by the Broadcasting Review Committee which reported in 1974. The committee found that sufficient justification did not exist for a shortwave service on the grounds of limited audience and technical difficulties. These problems still exist today. However, I am willing to re-examine the issue.
