Vol. 430 No. 2

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Disciplinary Code.

John Bruton

Question:

177 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Defence if he has any proposals to introduce amendments to the Defence Acts to provide a more modern basis for the disciplinary code operating in the Defence Forces.

The administration of discipline in the Defence Forces is governed by the Defence Act, 1954, and by regulations made thereunder. These are revised and updated as necessary to reflect developments in military and civil legal codes and practices.

As I indicated in the Dáil recently — Question No. 15 of 6 April, 1993 — the recommendations of the Commission on Remuneration and Conditions of Service in the Defence Forces in relation to complaints procedures are currently being examined by a subcommittee representing the Department and the representative associations in order to identify problems and bring forward recommendations.
