Vol. 430 No. 2

Written Answers. - National Museum Items.

Ivor Callely

Question:

242 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the number of items in the care of the National Museum that are on display, in storage or under repair; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I indicated in reply to a similar parliamentary question on 9 March, 1993, the number of items in the care of the National Museum is constantly increasing, due mainly to donation from private donors. It is not, therefore, possible to give accurate figures on the numbers of items as requested by the Deputy.

There are approximately 12,000 items on display in the National Museum and also a small number of items on loan to other Museums, such as the Limerick City Museum, Kerry County Museum, Donegal County Museum and Fermanagh County Museum. The remainder of the items are in storage and a small number of these are under conservation.
