Vol. 430 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

308 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the school transport situation for Kilmore national school, Kilmore, County Cavan, and the difficulties experienced by the teachers; and her views on whether all pupils should receive their full share of tuition time.

Up to the end of June, 1992, the service operating to Kilmore NS was provided by two buses. As is normal, Bus Éireann reviewed the services before the commencement of the current school year. It was decided to combine the services into one, when one of the contractors resigned. As a result, some children have to wait some time both morning and evening for the bus service. Double tripping is a feature of the school transport scheme as the Department strives to provide a basic level of service in the most cost-effective manner.

I am aware of the situation to which the Deputy refers. I have had the matter investigated by Bus Éireann, and as a result, arrangements are now being made to put back the afternoon collection time of the children in question so as to avoid any loss of tution time.
