Vol. 430 No. 2

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Posts.

Paul Bradford

Question:

317 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education the number of requests for a remedial teacher which she has received from a parish (details supplied) in County Cork where over 270 pupils attend the four national schools.

Michael Creed

Question:

334 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if an application has been received from a parish (details supplied) in County Cork for a remedial teacher.

I propose to take Question Nos. 317 and 334 together.

I can confirm that the schools in question have made application for a remedial teacher to my Department.

The Programme for a Partnership Government made a specific commitment to the appointment of 500 additional remedial teachers by September 1996.

As a first step towards honouring this commitment, I have decided to appoint an additional 80 remedial teachers with effect from September 1993.

These posts will be allocated to individuals and groups of schools on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by data collected from schools.

The needs of all schools, including the schools mentioned by the Deputy, will be considered in this context.
