Vol. 430 No. 2

Written Answers. - Community Halls.

John O'Leary

Question:

318 Mr. O'Leary asked the Minister for Education whether funds are available by way of ESF grants for the extension of community halls by communities in rural areas; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The European Social Fund was established under Article 123 of the Treaty of Rome with the "task of rendering the employment of workers easier and of increasing their geographical and occupational mobility within the Community". The Fund is used for certain approved vocational training and education measures, and recruitment and employment subsidies which are designed to promote economic development and the integration of certain groups into the labour market.

There are no ESF funds in the education sector to cover the extension of community halls in rural areas.
