Vol. 430 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Psychological Service.

Michael McDowell

Question:

93 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the commitment in the Programme for a Partnership Government 1993-1997 to expand the school psychological service, she will continue and develop the current pilot schemes in Clondalkin, Dublin 22 and in Tipperary South Riding which are now completing their third year; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy is aware the three year pilot project for the establishment of a general psychological service to primary schools will end on the 31st August 1993.

An independent evaluator has been appointed to assess the project and I hope to have his report before the end of 1993. Consideration will then be given to the most appropriate approach to the expansion of the service in line with the policy defined in the Programme for a Partnership Government 1993-1997.

The pilot schemes in West Dublin and South Tipperary will continue until such time as decisions have been taken on the expansion of the service.
