Vol. 430 No. 5

Written Answers. - Bank Merger.

Ivan Yates

Question:

92 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to recent statements by the Chairman of the ACC stating his opposition to the proposals in the Programme for a Partnership Government, 1993-1997 relating to the future of the ACC, the ICC and Trustee Savings Bank.

The views of the chairman of ACCBANK in relation to the third banking force proposal in the Programme for a Partnership Government were set out in his statement to the annual general meeting on 21 April 1993 as follows:

The Programme for a Partnership Government 1993-1997 speaks of a merger between ACCBANK and ICC Bank. Such a merger would have wide-ranging implications for both institutions, their management and staff. These implications will require careful consideration by the Government, the Department of Finance and ourselves and we look forward in due course to making our considered views known to Government when they come to consider these proposals in detail.”

In addition, the chairman of ACCBANK has assured me that the board and management of the bank are fully conscious that it is entirely a matter for the Government to decide on the future of ACCBANK and whatever decision the Government takes will have their total co-operation and support.
