Bernard Allen

Question:

37 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment when he will make a decision on the setting up of regional authorities and on the way in which membership will be formulated.

Avril Doyle

Question:

56 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any, he has to establish regional authorities in 1993; and whether further legislation will be required.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

94 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to proceed with his proposals for regional authorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 37, 56 and 94 together.

The Programme for a Partnership Government states that regional authorities will be established in 1993 and section 43 of the Local Government Act, 1991, provides the legislative support for this. The membership of a regional authority under this provision would consist of persons who are members of county and county borough councils in the region. Proposals relating to the establishment of regional authorities are now being finalised and I hope to be able to announce decisions in the matter at an early date.
