Vol. 431 No. 1

Written Answers. - EC Directive on Waste.

Pat Cox

Question:

47 Mr. Cox asked the Minister for the Environment if, pending the introduction of the Waste Bill to implement EC directive 75/442/EEC as amended by 91/156/EEC and in light of the fact that this directive was to have been implemented by member states by 1 April 1993 there are any interim measures envisaged to provide for partial implementation of the Directive.

, Wexford): An important purpose of the Waste Bill now being prepared is to provide an improved and comprehensive framework for the implementation of existing and prospective EC legislative provisions on waste, including Council Directive 75/44/EEC on waste, as amended by Council Directive 91/156/EEC.

Many of the provisions of these Directives are however either being implemented within the context of existing legislation or do not require direct transposition into national legislation. I will consider shortly, depending on progress with the Waste Bill, the need to transpose other provisions of the amended Waste Directive into Irish law by means of regulations under the European Communities Act, 1972.
