Vol. 431 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cardiovascular Disease.

Question:

110 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Health the possible effects on health caused by hardness in water; the studies, if any, that have been carried out on the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

International studies carried out to date indicate that mortality from cardiovascular disease seemed to be somewhat lower in areas that use hard water sources for drinking water supplies. The effect of the water factor was found to be small however, in comparison with other cardiovascular disease risk factors such as heavy smoking.
