Vol. 431 No. 3

Written Answers. - Irish Dairy Products Promotion.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

172 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the extent to which he or his Department actively support the promotion of Irish dairy products at home and abroad at present; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The promotion of Irish dairy products is primarily a matter for the industry itself. I am well aware of the need for such promotion and have actively supported the financing from EC co-responsibility levy funds of generic promotion and publicity measures in the dairy sector.

In the absence of that levy, which has now been abolished, I am seeking the option for member states to apply a small levy at national level to allow for a continuation of such measures.
