Vol. 431 No. 3

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointments.

Avril Doyle

Question:

212 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for Education if she will appoint a remedial teacher to be shared among national schools (details supplied) in County Wexford for the academic year 1993-1994.

An additional 83 remedial teachers are being appointed with effect from September 1993. Decisions have now been taken on the allocation of these new posts and the schools selected will be notified shortly.

These appointments are being made, on the basis of priority of need, following the collection of data from schools by my Department's Primary Inspectorate.

Unfortunately, the schools mentioned by the Deputy have not been selected for receipt of one of these 83 new posts. However, their needs may prove capable of being met through a sharing arrangement involving other schools in their areas which are receiving the service. This possibility will be examined as part of an ongoing review of the operation of the service nationwide.

I should point out that three of the new posts are being allocated to County Wexford, resulting in a further seven schools receiving the service. As a result of this allocation 64 per cent of pupils in County Wexford will have access to a remedial service.

I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review as part of a broader commitment to appoint 500 additional remedial teachers by September 1996. The needs of all schools, will be considered in this context.

Gerard Collins

Question:

213 Mr. Collins asked the Minister for Education if she will appoint additional remedial teachers in County Limerick in view of the urgent need for such teachers.

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that two additional remedial teachers are being appointed in County Limerick with effect from September next. These appointments will bring an additional four schools in the county into the remedial service.

Of the 148 ordinary primary schools in County Limerick, 27 schools will then have the services of a remedial teacher on a full-time basis. A further 51 schools will have the services of a remedial teacher on a shared basis.
Seventy-seven per cent of pupils in the county will be attending schools which have the services of a remedial teacher.

Michael Creed

Question:

214 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if she has received an application from a school (details supplied) in County Cork for the appointment of a remedial teacher; and, if so, when their application will be approved.

I have received an application for a remedial teacher from the school in question.

An additional 83 remedial teachers are being appointed with effect from September 1993. Decisions have now been taken on the allocation of these posts and the schools selected will be notified shortly.

These appointments are being made, on the basis of priority of need, following the collection of data from schools by my Department's Primary Inspectorate.

Unfortunately, the school mentioned by the Deputy has not been selected on this occasion. However, I should point out that eleven of the new posts are being allocated to County Cork, resulting in a further 36 schools receiving the service. As a result of this allocation 78 per cent of pupils in County Cork will have access to a remedial service.

I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review as part of a broader commitment to appoint 500 additional remedial teachers by September 1996. The needs of all schools, including the school mentioned by the Deputy will be considered in this context.
