Vol. 431 No. 3

Written Answers. - Recreational Use of Forests.

Seán Barrett

Question:

67 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he has any general policy concerning access for tourists to forest areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I certainly wish to see our forests being increasingly appreciated and enjoyed by our own people and tourists alike.

The Department last year launched the planned recreational forestry scheme which encourages the planting of woodlands where the emphasis is on the provision of public recreational facilities. One of the conditions of grant assistance under this scheme is that applicants must agree to permit and facilitate public access to the forest. The grants are available to local authorities, Coillte, and private landowners.

Access by members of the public, including tourists, is a welcome feature of many of the forests operated by Coillte Teoranta. Indeed, Coillte have produced a booklet entitledDiscovering Ireland's Woodlands which is specifically aimed at facilitating the recreational use of forests throughout the country. The company has also provided recreational facilities in many of their forests for the benefit of visitors.
