Vol. 431 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Drug Squad.

Noel Ahern

Question:

116 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice if she will have arrangements made with the Commissioner to have some members of the drug squad attached to Finglas Station, Dublin 11; and if she will make a statement on the reported drug situation in the area, particularly south Finglas.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that while there has been a slight increase in drug abuse in Finglas South a number of measures have been taken to counteract the drug problem in the area. In addition, there is close liaison between local gardaí, the Divisional Task Force based at Santry and the Central Drug Unit in Harcourt Square which ensures an effective and co-ordinated response to any drugs problems in the area. This has resulted in a number of detections of drug related offences in the Garda Division that includes Finglas.

The allocation of manpower and other resources to specialist units such as drug enforcement is of course a matter for the Garda authorities and they have informed me that they are satisfied that the existing resources in Finglas are sufficient to deal with the problem there. The situation will, however, be kept under continuous review.
