Vol. 431 No. 3

Written Answers. - Regional Fishery Boards Funding.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

139 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Marine if he will provide financial assistance to the regional fishery boards and other interested bodies to assist them in restocking rivers and lakes which have been affected by pollution over the years.

This year's Estimates provide for a grant of £6.906 million to Fisheries Boards to cover all the services provided by these Boards, including restocking where the Boards consider that this is justified.

I would mention also that the Local Government (Water Pollution) (Amendment) Act, 1990 (Section 7) established the principle that the cost of any restocking deemed necessary after pollution incidents could be reclaimed from whomever was responsible for causing the pollution in question.
