Vol. 431 No. 4

Written Answers. - Promotional Costs of EXPO '92.

Mary Harney

Question:

31 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the cost to Ireland of the Pavilion and promotional costs connected therewith at the World Expo in Seville; the policy in relation to future world fairs and expositions; and if he will make a statement on then matter.

The total cost figure for Ireland's participation at EXPO '92 is still pending final settlement of accounts with main contractors, but is not expected to exceed £3,471 million. Participation was funded by the national lottery, which provided £3,322 million, and the balance was provided by private sponsorship.

Our participation in EXPO afforded Ireland a valuable opportunity to show all that is best about our country, including its attractiveness both as a holiday destination and as a location for foreign investment. Any further invitation to participate at world fairs and expositions will be considered on its merits, having regard to commercial considerations, participation costs, and potential benefits to the Irish economy.
