Vol. 431 No. 7

Written Answers - Women In Broadcasting.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

85 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht his views on the recommendation contained in the report of the commission on the Status of Women that he should set in train a strategy for the implementation, by both RTE and the Independent Radio Stations, of a policy of monitoring, on a regular basis, the presence of women in all job types especially management and technical jobs until women are equitably represented, policies to ensure that women are visible on television as senior authority figures and reporting on an annual basis of the results of the monitoring and of these policies; the training strategies to develop the management and technical potential of women and to develop an awareness among male decision-makers of sexism and sex stereotyping within the organisation and that RTE and Independent Radio and Television Commission should set up an annual award for programmes which contribute the better image of women in television.

The report of the Commission on the Status of Women accepted that there have been improvements in the situation regarding women in broadcasting. I will be examining the recommendations referred to by the Deputy to determine the most practical way — without infringing on the autonomy of RTE, the Independent Radio and Television Commission or the local broadcasting stations — of the objectives of the recommendations.
