Vol. 431 No. 7

Written Answers - Malicious Contamination of Foodstuffs.

Ivor Callely

Question:

86 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health the number of incidents of malicious contamination of foodstuffs reported to his Department which led to a withdrawal of such products for each of the years 1989 to 1992.

Only one such incident was reported to my Department in the period 1989 to 1992. This was in 1989 and related to contamination of baby foods with slivers of glass and other foreign matter. The stores from which the foods were brought were notified and stocks withdrawn. Public warnings were issued. The matter was reported to the Garda authorities as it involved a criminal investigation.
