Vol. 431 No. 8

Written Answers. - EC Directive-Related Legislation.

Michael Creed

Question:

114 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications when he will introduce legislation to comply with the EC Directive on package travel holidays and tours.

My Department is currently finalising arrangements for the implementation of the EC Council Directive 90/314 on Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours following an extensive process of consultation with tourism and travel industry representatives.

My Department's general approach to the implementation of the directive is to settle a framework for implementation which minimises its cost impact on package organisers without in any way diminishing consumer protection. In keeping with this approach, my Department circulated interests affected by the directive with a consultative paper on 27 May 1992. Following further extensive consultation on this paper my Department prepared draft implementation regulations which were circulated to interested parties on 8 April last.

My Department is now examining views received on these draft regulations. Following a full examination of these, I would hope to be able to make the necessary arrangements for the implementation of the directive shortly.
