Vol. 431 No. 8

Written Answers. - Nuclear Installations Closure.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

115 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he has written to the leaders of the G7 nations calling on them to allocate funds to facilitate the closing down of all RBMK reactors in Eastern Europe and Central Asia and to enable the areas in question to generate energy by less ecologically destructive means.

The answer is in the negative.

The question of an appropriate response to concerns about the safety of nuclear installations in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union is being coordinated at Community level by the EC Commission. Technical assistance programmes to address immediate operational safety and technical improvement measures have been put in place. A mutilateral programme by the major economic powers — the G.7 — has also been established following the Munich Economic Summit.
