Vol. 432 No. 1

Written Answers. - Departmental Working Hours.

Richard Bruton

Question:

232 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the total number of hours of overtime worked, in the most recent twelve month period for which figures are available, by persons employed by her Department or by public bodies under the aegis of her Department; the proportion this represents of total man hours worked; and the impact the proposed EC Directive on working hours will have on reducing this level of over-time.

The following information is in respect of the 1992 financial year.

In respect of my Department itself the number of hours of overtime was 39,800 which is approximately 2 per cent of the total number of hours worked. The implications of the proposed EC Directive are being considered.

In the case of the bodies under the aegis of my Department the following is the position:

Body

Overtime hours

% of total hours

Higher Education Authority

170

6

Royal Irish Academy

140

5

National Council for Educational Awards

150

5

Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies

600

0.5

Institúid Teangeolaíochta Éireann

69

0.2

In the case of these bodies the level of overtime is so small that the EC Directive on working hours will have no impact.
