Question:

241 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education the amount of financial assistance, granted directly in each of the years from 1986 to 1992, to national schools towards the provision of sports programmes for pupils, by management and staff; and the amounts of financial assistance given by her Department in each of these years to teacher groups who coordinate such programmes under the authority of boards of management.

Question:

247 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if she will list the various schemes under which grants for sport may be obtained by schools from her Department.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 240, 241 and 247 together.

While there are no formal schemes operated by my Department under which grants are made available to schools for school based programmes, in 1990 and 1991 once off grants totalling £84,825 and £69,700 respectively were allocated to the one, two and three teacher primary schools towards the purchase of small items of sport equipment. This scheme was advised to the school authorities by Circular No. 87/90. Payment of the grant was made to the chairman of the board of management of each school.

Under the annual scheme of grants to national sporting organisations grants are allocated annually in respect of expenditure related to administration, coaching, the purchase of equipment and projects which increase participation or raise standards of performance. An element of these programmes would be related to sport in schools.
