Vol. 432 No. 2

Written Answers. - Office Supplies and Equipment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

105 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the degree to which Irish manufactured office supplies and equipment, including computer supplies, are provided to his Department or to offices the Estimate for which falls within his group; the extent to which such requirements are met by overseas manufacturers where Irish alternatives exist; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department purchases computer equipment and related supplies in Ireland where such goods are available where the goods meet requirements and are competitively priced.

These goods are tendered for in accordance with EC Public Procurement Procedures. In the past 18 months, purchases of computer equipment and services sourced in Ireland accounted for almost 60 per cent of total expenditure in this area.

In view of the very wide range of office supplies and equipment, excluding computers, purchased it would not be possible, in the time available, to calculate accurately the percentage of these goods which are of Irish manufacture. However, and again subject to compliance with EC procedures, my Department's policy is to purchase the item of Irish manufacture where price and quality are similar to the imported product.

106 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the degree to which Irish manufactured office supplies and equipment, including computer supplies, are provided to his Department or to offices the estimate for which falls within his group; the extent to which such requirements are met by overseas manufacturers where Irish alternatives exist; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In the light of our obligations as a member of the European Community, it has not been the practice of my Department to keep detailed information as sought by the Deputy.

However, a check on quotations recently received shows that these came predominantly from firms operating in Ireland.
