Vol. 432 No. 2

Written Answers. - Telephone Charges.

Noel Ahern

Question:

104 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if, in relation to the recent announcement that £0.5 million would be available to deal with the problem caused by the new phone charges to various helpline bodies, he will give details of the way in which this allocation will be spent; when he or Bord Telecom will speak to the Samaritans, the Rape Crisis Centre and Childline, as to date no discussions have taken place and there is much concern on the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to my statement to the House on 18 May, 1993 in the course of which I intimated that Telecom Eireann is setting aside £500,000, to provide free access to certain voluntary services such as the Samaritans, Childline and the Rape Crisis Centre. The administration of these funds is a matter for the company which will arrange any necessary discussions.
