Vol. 432 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Textbook Publishing Company.

Paul McGrath

Question:

123 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education if she will give a breakdown of the amounts of money paid to each school textbook publishing company in each of the years from 1984 to 1993; and if these payments are related to specific publications.

My Department does not subsidise the publication of text books by private publishers, except in the case of Irish.

An Gum, the publications branch of my Department, produces textbooks in the Irish language, both originals and translations of English texts. There is also a grant scheme to subsidise the publication of school text books in Irish which has not been availed of in recent years.

Following is a breakdown of the payments made to the publishers of school text books for the years 1984 to 1993. These moneys are paid to publishing companies by An Gum in relation to the reproduction rights on Irish Language Translations and the production of educational magazines in the Irish Language. These payments are related to specific texts and magazines.
