Vol. 432 No. 2

Written Answers. - Primary Teachers.

Paul McGrath

Question:

124 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education the number of students she expects to graduate as primary teachers in each of the years from 1993 to 1996; if she has satisfied herself that these will be sufficient to fill the vacancies to be created by retirement in these years; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The following are the numbers expected to graduate as primary teachers from the Colleges of Education from 1993 to 1995:— 1993, 269; 1994, 268; 1995, 312. The number who will graduate in 1996 depends on the intake to the colleges this year, and his has not yet been decided.

As the level of intake for each year is determined having regard to the projected number of vacancies arising due to retirement and various other reasons, I am satisfied that the expected number of graduates in these years will be sufficient to meet the demand for trained teachers.
