Vol. 432 No. 3

Written Answers. - Motor Fuel Advertisements.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

125 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment his views on whether all advertisements which portray cars and unleaded petrol as environmentally friendly are misleading; and whether a Government warning, detailing the pollution, congestion and road deaths caused by cars, should accompany such advertisements.

I have no proposal to introduce a Government warning on these lines.

Without wishing to reflect on the merits of particular advertisements, it is the case that EC and national legislation is designed to encourage vehicle emission controls and use of unleaded petrol, and that considerable effort and investment has been made by the public and private sectors in support of these environmentally driven objectives.
