Vol. 432 No. 3

Written Answers. - Abuse of Human Rights in Sudan.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

60 Mr. Sargent asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has written to the Head of State in Khartoum, Sudan, to urge the authorities to account for the whereabouts of the hundreds of people who disappeared after being arrested by security forces in Juba, Sudan, between June and August 1992.

The Minister for State at the Department of Foreign Affairs visited Khartoum in April, where he met the Sudanese Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Deputy Minister. During his meetings, Minister Kitt raised the general question of human rights in Sudan and our particular concerns about abuses of human rights in Southern Sudan, including at Juba in 1992, and in the Nuba Hills. We will continue to press the Sudanese Government on the issue of human rights.
