Vol. 432 No. 6

Written Answers. - Primary Schools Caretaking and Clerical Services

Michael Finucane

Question:

217 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Education if her Department gave a commitment to provide permanent care-takers for primary schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The commitment given under the terms of the Programme for Economic and Social Progress was for a phased programme of financial assistance by way a supplementary capitation grant for the provision of caretaking and clerical services in national schools. The first phase of this programme was introduced from 1 September 1992.

It targeted national schools with enrolments of 500 pupils or over which have not had caretaking and/or clerical assistance already.

Arrangements are being made at present for the introduction of phase two later this year. The Deputy will be aware that it is a matter for individual boards of management to make provision relative to their needs in regard to the employment of ancillary staff.
