Vol. 432 No. 7

Written Answers. - National Anti-Litter Programme.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

7 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to set up a national anti-litter programme in view of the fact that litter is hindering the national recovery programme and in view of the commitment he gave in his address at the launch of the Clean-Up Ireland Week recently to eliminate the problem by changing for the good the litter culture in Ireland.

My Department promoted an extended multi-media anti-litter campaign during the second half of 1992. This campaign was reinforced by the more broadly based national Clean-Up Ireland Week which has recently been completed. I am at present carrying out a detailed review of the clean-up campaign in conjunction with local authorities. I intend to decide on the nature and scope of further necessary programmes and campaigns in the light of this review.

I fully accept that litter is a serious environmental problem and that all sections of society have a duty to contribute to its solution on the basis of the principle of shared responsibility for the environment.
