Vol. 433 No. 5

Written Answers. - Orthodontic Treatment.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

137 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Health the number of orthodontists currently employed in the Western Health Board areas of Galway, Mayo and Roscommon; if an extra orthodontist was employed by the Western Health Board in Galway; if so, the impact, if any, that has been made on the waiting lists since that appointment; and the average cost per individual for orthodontic treatment over the past two years.

There is one orthodontist currently employed by the Western Health Board. This consultant orthodontist took up duty with the board in November 1992. I understand from the Western Health Board that since she took up duty with the board the consultant orthodontist has seen approximately 500 patients for assessment and has commenced treatment on 150 patients.

The average cost to the health board per individual for treatment over the past two years was £1,300.
