Vol. 433 No. 5

Written Answers. - County Limerick School.

Michael Finucane

Question:

156 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Education if she has clarified whether secondary school education will continue at a school (details supplied) in County Limerick from September 1995, as parents, teachers and pupils need to know so that first year pupils can be accepted in September 1993, and now that primary schools in the catchment areas are closed for the summer holidays; and if she will make a statement as to the position in order to eliminate the present uncertainty which prevails.

The Deputy will be aware of the decision taken by the trustees of the school in question to withdraw from management of the school in 1995 and to cease to enrol new pupils from September 1993. As the school is a voluntary secondary school, these decisions are matters solely for the school authorities.

A proposal has been put to my Department that the school should continue to operate as a post-primary school, after 1995, under the management of County Limerick Vocational Education Committee.

My Department has been examining this proposal in the light of the considerable, estimated costs involved in implementation.

I am aware of the concern of the parents, teachers and pupils on the matter and I anticipate communicating an early decision to the various interests involved.
