Vol. 433 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dungarvan (Waterford) Vocational School.

Austin Deasy

Question:

157 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education the progress, if any, that has been made to date with regard to the provision of a permanent structure for students attending the Dungarvan Vocational School, Dungarvan, County Waterford; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

As I informed the Deputy in reply to Question No. 107 tabled by him on 11 March 1993, the architectural planning of a new vocational school building was suspended in 1987 in the light of the declining demographic trend and its implication for future post-primary enrolments in Dungarvan.

County Waterford Vocational Education Committee has recently submitted proposals for the provision of a major extension to the existing vocational school building in Dungarvan. In April I met a deputation from the vocational education committee to discuss the proposal. In June a senior official of my Department visited the vocational school and met vocational education committee representatives.

The vocational education committee proposals, which would involve an estimated expenditure of over £1 million are now being further considered within my Department.
