Vol. 433 No. 5

Written Answers. - Oyster Bed Allocations.

Austin Deasy

Question:

96 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Marine the measures, if any, his Department has taken to ensure that oyster beds are allocated to applicants in accordance with commitments given by his staff; if, in particular, he will examine the case of a person (details supplied) in County Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A number of individual applications for licensing of oyster production at specific sites in Dungarvan Harbour are being considered by the Department.

In order to accommodate the concerns of a number of applicants, a meeting between the applicants and officials of the Department was recently held in Dungarvan in the interests of achieving a consensus on the proposed areas to be allocated and licensed. Revised licensing proposals, as agreed at that meeting, are currently being finalised by the Department and I expect to be in a position to make a decision on the issue of licences shortly.
