Vol. 433 No. 7

Written Answers. - Post Primary School Places.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

158 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education whether adequate post primary school places for girls will be available in Celbridge, County Kildare in the next school year; if, in view of the condition of existing accommodation and announcements already made by the Government and the Holy Faith Sisters, she will give the means by which, and the financial source she will use to address these needs; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

There is one post-primary school catering for girls in Celbridge — St. Wolstan's Secondary School. My Department has received no application from this school for grant-aid towards the provision of additional accommodation for the next school year and, in so far as my Department is aware, adequate post-primary places are available for girls in Celbridge for the coming school year.

With regard to the long term provision to be made for girls in Celbridge, at post-primary level, my Department has been examining the matter in the light of the announcement by the Holy Faith Sisters of their intention to withdraw from management of St. Wolstan's in 1997. My Department accepts that new post-primary facilities for girls in Celbridge will be required and, at present, negotiations are proceeding with a view to securing a suitable site for such facilities.

Funds for the construction of post-primary building projects are allocated from the post-primary capital provision made available to my Department in each financial year. Each building project is considered for inclusion in the building programme in the light of available resources, and in the light of other commitments and priorities.
