Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - School TV Licence Exemption.

Paul McGrath

Question:

458 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education the proposals, if any, she has to allow schools be exempted from holding a television licence for a set used exclusively for educational programmes; if she has had discussions with the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht on this matter; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The position is that any provision for the exemption of schools from the purchase of TV licences would appear to require the amendment of the present legislation in this field. Also, under present legislation there is no distinction made between television sets used as monitors for videos and those used to receive television programmes. Any such changes would be a matter for the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht.

In this context, I have asked officials of my Department to take up this matter with the Department of Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht.
