Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Assistance for Disabled Student.

Seán Barrett

Question:

106 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for Education if there is any assistance, including free transport, available for a person (details supplied) in County Dublin who has been offered a third level place at Pearse College, Crumlin, Dublin 12, but who, because of his disability, is unable to use public transport; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the case to which the Deputy refers and I have instructed my Department to undertake an urgent examination of the possibilities for providing assistance in this case, in consultation with the relevant Health Authorities.

I should point out that the general School Transport Scheme, as it currently operates, is designed and funded to deal with primary and second-level pupils only. My Department does not therefore have discretion under that scheme to extend provision into the third-level sector.
However, I would be most anxious that handicapped students in particular should not be faced with unreasonable impediments in seeking to progress in the education system.
I will advise the Deputy of the outcome of the present investigation as soon as possible.
