Vol. 434 No. 3

Written Answers. - “Annals of Innisfallen”

John O'Leary

Question:

111 Mr. O'Leary asked the Minister for Finance if he will have arrangements made to have the "Annals of Inisfallen" transferred on a permanent basis from England to be maintained for viewing either in Muckross House, Killarney, or in Ross Castle, Killarney, County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The "Annals of Innisfallen" were bequested to the Bodleian Library in Oxford in 1755 on the death of their owner. In response to previous requests to return the annals to this country, the library authorities contended that they could not do so, on the grounds that they were statute bound not to dispose of such bequests. This situation remains unaltered.

The "Annals of Innisfallen" were loaned to the Office of Public Works by the Bodleian Library for some months in 1983. As part of the fiftieth anniversary celebrations of the Bourne Vincent Memorial Park, the annals were exhibited to the public in Muckross House, Killarney.
