Vol. 434 No. 3

Written Answers. - New Programme of Economic and Social Progress.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

112 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of his forthcoming negotiations for a new Programme for Economic and Social Progress where IBEC is calling for a pay pause followed by very low pay rises, he will give his views on the fact that a recent survey confirms that managers in the private sector enjoyed a 6.5 per cent increase in remuneration in the years 1992-93.

I have seen reports of the survey referred to by the Deputy. My more immediate concern in the negotiations for a new programme will focus on the immediate and long-term need both to protect existing employment and to create new jobs. It is imperative that the outcome of any new wage negotiations for 1994 and beyond should be moderate and lead to improved competitiveness and so have the potential to improve prospects for employment.
