Vol. 434 No. 4

Written Answers. - Rindown Castle, County Roscommon.

John Connor

Question:

41 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the continued destruction and ruin of Rindown Castle on the shores of Lough Ree in County Roscommon; if his attention has been further drawn to the fact that this is one of the most significant medieval castle sites in the country; and the plans, if any, he has for the protection and restoration of the site.

Rindown Castle, which was abandoned in the early 17th century, is just one feature of the deserted medieval town of Rindown. The land in question is in private ownership and consequently the Commissioners of Public Works would be statutorily debarred from carrying out any works there. However, legal protection has been afforded to this site since 1970, when it was "listed" under the National Monuments Acts.
