Vol. 434 No. 4

Written Answers. - Shooting of Birds.

John Browne

Question:

43 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Finance his views on the shooting habits of tourists who come to this country and stay as guests of hotels and Bord Fáilte and who seem to be indiscriminate in the kind of birds they shoot.

While this is a widely held perception there is no evidence that tourist shooters are indiscriminate in what wild birds they shoot. A number of incidents have been investigated by the National Parks and Wildlife Service of the Office of Public Works and, where bags were checked in hotels and in the field last season, only huntable species listed in the Open Seasons Order were found.
