Vol. 434 No. 4

Written Answers. - Status of NESF Decisions.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

74 Mr. Sargent asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the status of decisions taken by the NESF; and the mechanisms he intends to put in place to respond to this body.

The National Economic and Social Forum will make an important contribution to the formation of a national consensus on major issues of economic and social policy and to the development of new initiatives to tackle unemployment. The forum will submit its reports to Government for consideration and they will also be laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas. The Programme for Government also provides that forum reports may be debated in the Oireachtas from time to time.

The Office of the Tánaiste will pursue the recommendation of the forum, ensure that they are brought to the attention of the relevant Departments or State Agencies and report to the forum on progress being made in their implementation.
