Vol. 434 No. 4

Written Answers. - Bank Note Replacement.

Peter Barry

Question:

101 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Finance the proposals, if any, there are to issue coin to replace bank notes; if he has satisfied himself that the introduction of the pound coin met with public approval; if there is any proposal to reverse recent trends and introduce a £2 note; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There are no proposals at present to issue coin to replace bank notes. The situation in this regard is, of course, kept under continuous review.

I am satisfied that the introduction of the pound coin has generally met with public approval. Under section 118 of the Central Bank Act, 1989, the issue of currency notes is a matter for the Central Bank. The bank informs me that it has no proposals to issue a £2 note.
