Vol. 434 No. 5

Written Answers. - Remedial Teaching Posts.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

93 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education if additional remedial teaching posts will be provided for schools in County Tipperary in either the current academic year or the year commencing September 1994; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In the current year, I have announced the appointment of an additional 86 remedial teachers, bringing the total now in place to 1,032.

These appointments were made on the basis of priority of need, following the collection of data from schools by my Department's Primary Inspectorate.
Two of the new posts were allocated to County Tipperary, resulting in a further six schools receiving the service. As a result of this allocation, 62 per cent of pupils in County Tipperary will have access to a remedial service.
I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review as part of a broader commitment to appoint a substantial number of additional teachers in the coming years. The needs of all schools, including the schools in County Tipperary, will be considered in this context.
