Vol. 434 No. 6

Written Answers. - Community Service Facilities.

Liz McManus

Question:

77 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice the steps, if any, she intends to take to ensure that community service facilities are available in each locality so that when offenders are sentenced to community service orders, they will be carried out in the offenders' locality or neighbourhood.

In so far as is practicable, offenders will carry out the Order of the Court in their local or surrounding areas as arranged by my Department's Probation and Welfare Service. However, a guarantee could not be given that there would be work available in every locality nor may there be sufficient numbers of offenders to undertake a group project. Also, it may not be appropriate in certain instances for the offender to work in his-her locality.
