Vol. 434 No. 6

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grant.

Tony Gregory

Question:

122 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education if she will approve the application of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 3 for a higher education grant under clause 19 of the scheme in view of the circumstances of the case.

I understand from Dublin Corporation, which is the body statutorily entrusted with the administration of the Higher Education Grants Scheme in this case, that the person in question has been deemed ineligible for a higher education grant for the first year of a degree course in the 1993/94 academic year, in accordance with the terms of the 1993 scheme, as he has already completed one year of another degree course.

The terms of the scheme have been applied correctly in this case, and as those terms are of general application, I regret I cannot approve a grant for the first year of the course.

The person may, however, qualify for a grant for the remainder of the course, provided he satisfies the other requirements of the scheme. I would refer the Deputy to Dublin Corporation for any further information he may require in that regard.
